Boomtown on the Interstate

Heavy Duty Towing in Burkburnett means working the north end of Interstate 44, where Texas runs out. The city had 10,939 residents at the 2020 census and sits in Wichita County, about 10 miles north of Wichita Falls according to the Texas State Historical Association. Burkburnett is close to the Red River at the point where I-44 meets State Highway 240. Drivers northbound out of Wichita Falls pass through here on the way to Oklahoma City and the Midwest.

The last miles of Texas

The I-44 segment north from Wichita Falls to Burkburnett and the Red River opened in 1964. It is the quick route into Oklahoma, so it carries long-haul freight, bus charters and RVs that never planned a stop in town. When one of them quits at the state line, the first useful fact is which side of the river you are on. Tell the dispatcher before anything else, and tell us the direction you were traveling.

From oil boom to plants

Oil was found west of town in 1912, with larger strikes in 1918 and 1925. By late 1918 the wells produced about 7,500 barrels a day, and roughly 20,000 people had moved to the oilfield region. Nineteen refineries processed the local oil that year. The boom faded by the late 1920s, and the town is still nicknamed Boomtown, U.S.A. The Handbook of Texas reports that by 1989 factories here made chemical products, plastics and machinery. Chemical and plastics loads can mean placarded cargo, so say so on the first call.

A railroad town first

The Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway was extended north from Wichita Falls in 1906 for wheat shipments and flour milling, and a depot opened in 1907. By 1915 the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad ran nineteen trains a day to Burkburnett. Trucks took over that freight long ago, but the north-south corridor stayed.

Numbers behind the town

Burkburnett covers about 11.54 square miles per Wikipedia's infobox and sits at 1,040 feet of elevation. Its population rose from 2,814 in 1940 to 4,555 in 1950 after Sheppard Field opened nearby in 1941, and reached 7,621 by 1960 (Texas Almanac figures in the Handbook of Texas). Samuel Burk Burnett sold over 16,000 acres to investors in 1906, and Theodore Roosevelt gave the town its name after a wolf hunt hosted by Burnett.

Heat and roadway

The climate is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers. In summer, blown tires and overheated engines are common reasons semis stop. Tell us if smoke or fuel is present, and stay clear of the unit.

Burkburnett Questions

I broke down on I-44 just before the Oklahoma line. Can you come?

Tell dispatch your direction and how close you are to the Red River. We confirm the location on the call and give an honest arrival estimate.

Do you handle placarded or chemical loads at Burkburnett?

Say on the first call if the cargo is hazardous or chemical. That changes who must be on scene and how the load is handled.

Can a bus charter be towed from SH 240?

Yes. Give the passenger count, the road and the direction, and dispatch plans a heavy wrecker and a safe waiting spot.

Do you recover trucks that left the road near the river?

Yes. Describe the slope and ground. A winch recovery from soft ground is planned differently from a plain tow.
