Dairy Country on US 281
Heavy Duty Towing in Windthorst serves a town of 342 people (2020 census) that straddles the Archer and Clay county line, mostly in eastern Archer County. Wikipedia says US 281 passes through the center of town, leading north 25 miles to Wichita Falls and southeast 33 miles to Jacksboro. State Highway 25 leads west from the center 11 miles to Archer City. So the town is a small place on a long north-south route.
German Catholic roots
Windthorst was named for Ludwig Windthorst, a Catholic statesman in Germany. The Handbook of Texas says it was settled by German Catholics, with F. T. Ledergerber of St. Louis and others contracting for up to 75,000 acres of Circle Ranch land in 1891. By 1895 the community had seventy-five families. St. Mary's Catholic Church stands on a hill. St. Mary's Grotto was paid for with money sent home by 64 military service members from Windthorst who served in World War II.
Why it matters for trucks
The Handbook of Texas says farming, oil and dairying are the most important industries here, and the town is known locally as the dairy capital of North Texas. Dairy means milk tankers and feed trucks. A milk tanker is a special case. Liquid loads move inside the tank, so a tanker on its side or in a ditch needs a plan that accounts for load and tank. Tell dispatch whether it is full or empty.
Slow vehicles, fast highway
Rural US 281 mixes farm equipment with loaded highway traffic. A tractor or hay hauler turning from a field road can be hit by a truck that cannot stop in time. If your unit blocks a lane after a collision, say so first. We want to know about injuries, fuel leaks and blocked lanes before anything else.
Small town facts
Windthorst sits at 1,034 feet of elevation, covers about 2.5 square miles and is part of the Wichita Falls metro area. With a population this small, the right wrecker usually comes from farther away, so exact details on the first call matter.
What the settlement built
After the 1891 land contract, the purchasing company funded a rectory, a church and a school. By 1893 the community had about forty settlers. The Handbook of Texas records a high of about 1,000 people in 1977, 440 in 2000 and 342 in 2020. The town covers about 2.5 square miles and straddles two counties, which can matter if law enforcement or a county road is involved.
Roads out of town
US 281 runs northwest toward Wichita Falls and southeast to Jacksboro. SH 25 runs west to Archer City. Name the highway and the direction, since the same town sign can mean two very different recoveries.
