Oil Country on US 287

Heavy Duty Towing in Electra serves a small oil town of 2,292 people (2020 census) in northwestern Wichita County. The Handbook of Texas places Electra on US 287 and State Highway 477, about fifteen miles northwest of Wichita Falls. The next major town up US 287 is Vernon, and between them the road is mostly open country.

The oil that built the road traffic

On April 1, 1911, Clayco No. 1 blew in about a mile north of town. The Handbook of Texas says the Electra field made about ten million barrels from 1911 to the mid-1920s, and Wikipedia reports the town's population peaked at 6,712 in 1930 before falling to 2,292 in 2020. In 2001 the state made Electra's claim to the title of Pump Jack Capital of Texas official. The trucks that serve wells today are the descendants of that boom: water haulers, vacuum trucks, winch trucks and trailers carrying pumpjacks and tanks.

Ranch roots

Daniel Waggoner started a ranch on the town site in 1852. His son William T. Waggoner helped bring a railroad switch in 1885. The town was named for his daughter Electra, and it incorporated in 1907. Oilfield and ranch work still brings heavy equipment onto US 287 from side roads, and a rig that quits at a turn-in needs the right truck and the right approach.

What goes wrong on these roads

  • Oilfield trailers with high centers of gravity rolling on lease roads
  • Loaded water trucks stuck in soft ground after rain
  • Open stretches where it is hard to describe exactly where you stopped
  • Livestock trailers that cannot be left on the shoulder for long

Boom and bust

The Handbook of Texas says the population reached 5,000 within months of the 1911 strike, and Wikipedia gives 6,712 as the 1930 peak. Oil-field decline and the 1970s oil crisis contributed to the loss of people, and by 2020 the count was 2,292, down from 2,791 in 2010. Electra covers about 3.08 square miles at 1,227 feet of elevation. The town built a 100-acre park to attract new industries.

Distance matters

Electra is about fifteen miles from Wichita Falls on a highway expressway built in 1962 to this point. Even so, a heavy call out here depends on where the nearest recovery truck is working, which is why exact details help. A recovery that needs a second truck or a service truck takes longer to stage, and dispatch will tell you honestly.

Ranch heritage

The railroad station was built after William Thomas Waggoner lobbied railroad executives in 1885. The town was called Beaver Switch after a post office opened in 1889 and was renamed Electra in 1907, according to Wikipedia, while the Handbook of Texas says residents named the town in 1902. Whichever date you prefer, the name comes from the Waggoner family, whose ranch operations shaped this corner of Wichita County.
