Heavy Duty Towing in Scotland, TX

A US 281 Town on Lake Arrowhead

Heavy Duty Towing in Scotland means recovery on US 281 in eastern Archer County. Wikipedia puts Wichita Falls about 18 miles north and Jacksboro about 40 miles south, and the Texas State Historical Association says Scotland is on US 281. Call (940) 283-6645 if a semi, RV, bus or piece of equipment is stopped there.

US 281 south of Wichita Falls

The US 281 route description says that heading north from Jacksboro, the highway passes Windthorst, then Scotland, where FM 172 links to Bluegrove, and farther north FM 1954 leads to Holliday and Lake Arrowhead. Upon reaching Wichita Falls, US 281 becomes a freeway. So the trip from Scotland to the city is a straight run on a rural highway that turns into a freeway. A semi down on that approach needs traffic control.

Give dispatch the direction (north to Wichita Falls or south to Jacksboro), the closest farm road and any landmark. We give an honest arrival estimate on the call.

German farmers and a lake

The Texas State Historical Association says Scotland began as a German Catholic farming community on part of the O Circle Ikard Ranch. Henry J. Scott of Toronto bought the land and established the town around 1907. The first train came on July 21, 1908, and the Southwestern Railway abandoned its 29 miles of track between Henrietta and Archer City by 1920. After a good road to Wichita Falls opened, local business declined.

Construction of Lake Arrowhead began in 1965 on the Little Wichita River. The lake is owned by Wichita Falls to supply its water, and the town sits on its shore. Wikipedia says the city limits extend east to the lake.

Weekend traffic

Lake traffic brings boat haulers, travel trailers and motorhomes along US 281. A towed boat and a disabled truck together make a bigger recovery than either alone. Tell us if you are pulling something, and how long the whole combination is.

Farm, dairy and poultry roots

The Texas State Historical Association says that in 1929 residents were mainly farming, dairying and raising poultry. Grain and cotton were shipped in 1910. Today the area is still farm country. Tractors and farm trucks use the road, and slow-moving equipment is part of the collision risk.

Quiet roads, long gaps

Scotland had 413 people in the 2020 census. Between the lake and Wichita Falls, there is a lot of open road. A truck with a failed axle or flat tire on a dark stretch needs reflectors and a clear location from the driver. Call (940) 283-6645.
